Commenting on the ‘Open Ormeau’ plan, Retail NI Chief Executive Glyn Roberts said:

“We need to show imagination and creativity in revitalising our high streets and public places to deal with the impact of Covid-19. In recent years the Ormeau Road has developed an excellent retail and hospitality offer which adds to Belfast as a whole”

“However, following extensive discussions with our members and the broader business community on the Ormeau Road, it is very clear that there is huge concern from them with the ‘Open Ormeau’ proposals”

“Retail NI is concerned that the views of the traders are not being taken into consideration. This project can only work if there is buy in from the local business community and that is plain to see it is not the case”

“We will be working closely with Ormeau Road traders and elected representatives in developing a new agreed strategy which can ensure the road bounces back from Covid-19 and can go from strength to strength”

“Belfast City Council and the Department for Infrastructure need to ensure they fully listen to the very real concerns that local traders have with ‘Open Ormeau”
